Identification

Bringing aviation technology to shipping via a new foldable wingsail designed to reduce fuel consumption and pollutant emissions of maritime transport in existing and newly built vessels.

The shipping industry transports 90% of the world’s cargo, resulting in enormous air pollution impacts. Designed as an engine assist technology, the rigid wingsail system is completely foldable to the ship's deck to avoid safety issues during harsh weather conditions or during loading/unloading operations. It is fully automated - no extra crew required - and will orient itself to maximize performances for any wind direction. As a result the wingsails thrust capacity is ten times higher than that of traditional sails and other existing novel designs. By generating effective thrust from wind power, Bound4blue’s rigid wingsails allow vessels to operate at their nominal service speed with reduced engine propulsion, thereby lowering fuel consumption and polluting less.

Implementation Stories

Bound4blue by bound4blue
Implemented by Amasus Shipping in Delfzijl (Netherlands) in 2022

Amasus Shipping signs an agreement with bound4blue to start powering the M/V EEMS Traveller with wind - bound4blue will install in 2022 two 17-metre-high eSAILs® on the general cargo vessel. - A similar unit was installed on M/V La Naumon, being the largest suction sail ever built and installed on a vessel. - Amasus Shipping is one of the biggest and most reputable European shipowners and operators in the shortsea, bulk, general cargo, offshore and worldwide heavy lift (including RoRo) market.

Result

Integrating wind-assisted propulsion systems like eSAILs® on ships significantly reduces fossil fuel consumption and lowers greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime industry.

Bound4blue by bound4blue
Implemented by Oceanking in Athens (Greece) in 2023

bound4blue and Oceanking have announced a partnership to jointly expand access to the eSAIL technology in Greece and Cyprus. The eSAIL is a wind-assisted propulsion system known as suction sail. Suction sails combine the positive features of both wingsails (ease of operation, low power consumption, excellent capacity to sail upwind) and flettner rotors (high lift, small size), resulting in the most payback-efficient technology in the market.

Result

The partnership between bound4blue and Oceanking aims to bring the efficient eSAIL wind-assisted propulsion technology to Greece and Cyprus, blending the best features of wingsails and Flettner rotors for a highly effective and compact solution that enhances the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of maritime operations.
