Carbon Dioxide Mineralisation

Turning captured carbon dioxide into inert rocks deep underground

44.01 eliminates CO2 by turning it into rock. The company's technology accelerates the natural process of CO2 mineralisation to remove captured CO2 permanently in less than twelve months. 44.01 takes CO2 captured directly from the air, or from hard-to-abate industrial processes, helping decarbonise vital industries and ultimately return the atmosphere to sustainable levels of CO2. The process is safe, scalable and lasts forever. 44.01 works with a commonly-found rock called peridotite, that naturally reacts with CO2 to convert the CO2 into calcite. To accelerate this reaction, 44.01 dissolves captured CO2 in water, then injects this fluid into formations of peridotite deep underground. There, because of the temperature, pressure and the concentration of the CO2 in the fluid, the CO2 mineralises rapidly. 44.01 uses a range of physical and chemical monitoring and verification techniques to confirm the CO2 has been contained in the subsurface and ultimately mineralised.

The environmental benefits

  • Peridotite commonly contains 45 to 55 wt% MgO and a few wt% CaO, therefore every tonne is capable of mineralising up to 500-600 kg of CO2, enabling large amounts of CO2 to be stored per tonne of rock
  • Mineralisation causes the CO2 to carbonate into solid carbonate minerals in under 12 months, permanently removing the CO2 in a safe, permanent, and scalable way
  • Using 44.01 technology, CO2 emissions from the atmosphere and hard-to-abate industries can be removed permanently, combating the effects of CO2 on the climate
  • Unlike conventional storage mechanisms where the CO2 is stored and can be re-released, 44.01s technology converts the CO2 to minerals offering a geological timeframe form of removal
  • Every tonne of pure olivine is capable of mineralising 500-600 kg of CO2

The Financial benefits

  • Given the CO2 is turned to carbonate minerals the on-going costs of mineralisation are lower in comparison to conventional storage, e.g. insurance costs, post-closure monitoring costs, etc.
  • Mineralisation can be deployed where conventional storage is not an option, thus offering a local, lower cost way to remove CO2 to various countries and regions, e.g. Japan
  • Mineralisation depends on many of the same skills and equipment as oil & gas exploration, offering new employment opportunities as the world navigates the energy transition
