Data centers consume ~ 420 terawatt hours per annum, or 3% of global electricity consumption. Cooling, which accounts for 40% of overall data center energy use (~ 168 TWh) is needed to keep critical IT applications running. However, if temperatures exceed certain thresholds, bad things happen. Cooling optimization is a challenging, multivariate and dynamic problem. The Solution uses machine learning and predictive control to meet specified environmental requirements and service level agreements in an efficient and sustainable way. Machine learning is used to train an Influence Model, which is used by predictive control software to make decisions about which cooling units to dispatch to extinguish hot spots, and to allocate capacity across a set of cooling units to optimize efficiency. Vigilent has solved the “exploitation vs exploration” conflict of reinforcement learning in the demanding mission critical facility industry by building intelligence into standard operating strategies such as machine rotation. The system supports open protocols such as BACnet and Modbus that enable seamless integration with other IT and facility management solutions
