Identification

Heating in buildings is at the core of energy consumption. Thus decarbonise energy sources is crucial to reduce associated emissions. Geothermal district heating is defined as the use of geothermal sources to supply heat to a group of buildings through a distribution network. The main benefits of geothermal sources are provision of local, and flexible renewable energy. Even though there are plenty of geothermal sedimentary reservoirs to use, there is sometimes heterogeneities of geological properties that limited productivity. The goal is then to optimise the draining area and thus to increase the overall energy extracted from the ground. This multidrains technology steps up the efficiency of a geothermal solution.

Implementation Stories

Multidrains geothermal wells by ENGIE
Implemented by City of Velizy-Villacoublay (France) in Velizy-Villacoublay (France) in 2021

The City of Velizy-Villacoublay in the Paris Basin wanted to use geothermal energy for its 19 km district heating networks – that were previously powered by gas and two cogeneration units – to cover more than 60% of the heat demand. They signed a 28-year contract with Engie for heat supply and upgraded the network to reach acceptable temperature and pressure levels for geothermal energy requirements. In 2022, Engie’s geothermal power plant of 18,2 MW was commissioned.

Result

Expected savings of 22,439 t of co2 / year compared to a gas solution while heating 12,000 homes

03.

The environmental benefits

  • Around 80% more efficient compared to a conventional solution
  • Saving 640,000 tons of CO2 over 30 years exploitation period compared to a fossil energy solution
04.

The Financial benefits

  • Considering +20% of drilling costs, the productivity is increased drastically
  • Only 2 innovative wells drilled instead of 4 conventional wells needed to reach the flowrates expected to cover network needs, means around €8 million saved for a project
  • Use geothermal source means stable heat price over time
