Arela Chemicals
Manufacturer of food grade liquefied carbon dioxide for makers of carbonated beverages in Ghana
Arela Chemicals is meeting the need for low cost and sustainably produced CO2 in Ghana. Bottlers of carbonated beverages in Ghana pay 10X more than bottlers in Europe and United States because it must be either imported or manufactured by combusting diesel, which itself is imported. Our manufacturing process converts a feedstock agricultural residue into biogas, a 50:50 mixture of carbon dioxide and methane. The CO2 is separated from the raw biogas and purified to food grade quality. The methane component is converted to electricity that is then used to meet 100% of the electrical demand of the manufacturing plant, thereby enabling off-grid operation. Excess methane is compressed and used to fuel the logistics fleet that collects the stover and distributes carbon dioxide to customers.

Description
We provide food grade CO2 to bottlers of carbonated beverages in Ghana at a fraction of the cost.
Bottlers in Ghana pay up to 10X more than the rich world for CO2 because it is either imported or produced by diesel combustion. We implement a sustainable manufacturing technology to lower the manufacturing cost of this key ingredient. Our utilization of biogas benefits both the local rural farming community and the environment. Due to a lack of access to fertilizer and other important agricultural inputs, maize yield is just 20% that in the rich world. To address this need, we provide farmers with free access to organic fertilizer produced as a byproduct in our anaerobic digester. At the end of the maize harvest, the residue is burned in the fields to clear them for the next planting season. This common farming practice generates GHG and small particulate matter (SPM) in the air which may lead to chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder in children of these communities. Children are more susceptible to SPM because their lungs are not fully developed to handle exposure to these foreign materials when they enter their lungs. Therefore, our manufacturing technology reduces GHG and improves air quality by diverting the maize residue to our factory instead of being burned in the field.
