Sanivation
Sanivation is addressing two major development challenges – access to sustainable energy and safely managed sanitation.
To address both of these problems, Sanivation partners with local governments and institutions to implement feces-to-fuel factories. These factories intake fecal sludge and other biomass residues to produce a sustainable fuel. The sale of fuel covers the operation costs of the factory, enabling it to process fecal sludge and produce fuel in perpetuity. We use our brand and credibility to bring together stakeholders to ensure a sustainable world, where safe and dignified sanitation is a reality for everyone, everyday.
Feces-to-fuel Factories
Description
We implements feces-to-fuel factories, which intake fecal sludge and biomass residues to produce a sustainable fuel.
Sanivation is a sanitation social enterprise in Kenya tackling the sanitation crisis by partnering with municipalities to turn feces into a sustainable fuel. We use our proprietary treatment technology to treat waste and transform it into an in-demand fuel. Then, we sell the briquettes back on the market, creating a financially sustainable and replicable model for sanitation services. Plus, our fuel saves 88 trees/ton, combatting deforestation. With this model, we’ve been recognized by FastCo as one of the top ten most innovative companies in Africa, become one of the first waste processors globally to be gross margin positive, and are serving 2,500+ people with safe sanitation services.
