In the US, according to the latest American Community Survey, over three quarters (76.3%) of commuters still drive to work alone in their cars. Surely, Americans have an intensive use of their cars, but the figure is still high in Europe: more than half of Swiss commuters (52,1%) drove to work in 2014, according to the Federal Statistical Office.

This has a big impact on the environment: the transportation sector accounts for one fifth of the world’s carbon dioxide emissions, which makes it the second largest polluting sector globally. Not only does it have a big environmental impact, but the massive use of cars also affects our economies, due to the time wasted in traffic jams.So what can we do about it? Carpooling is a simple, yet efficient solution to both traffic jams and car pollution.

Zify, one of the first solution to be granted the Solar Impulse Efficient Solution Label, was founded in 2014 by Anurag Rathor in Hyderabad, in India. Unlike many carpooling solutions available, Zify focuses on daily home to office commutes. Through their application, they connect car owners with people who share the same itinerary, helping to reduce CO2 footprints of commuters. Indeed, every car taken off the road is an average 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year which won’t go into our atmosphere! Since 2014, Zify estimates they have already saved 50,000 tons of CO2 from entering our atmosphere.

While Zify is already one of the leaders in the carpooling industry in India, it has recently launched its service in Europe and aims to become a widely used transport solution and develop shared mobility around the world.

We met with Zify’s Business Developer at the Movin’On conference in Montreal dedicated to the future of mobility, and we asked him a few questions about his solution:
