Cooling as a Service (CaaS) is an innovative business model that enables end-users to access clean and efficient cooling solutions without the need of an upfront investment. This servitization model addresses the key market barriers that hinder the adoption of sustainable cooling by allowing customers to pay for the service consumed, on a fixed-fee-per-unit basis. Meanwhile, the ownership of the system remains with the technology provider, who is responsible for all operation costs. Through its CaaS initiative, the Basel Agency for Sustainable Energy (BASE), with support from the Kigali Cooling Efficiency Program (K-CEP) and with the endorsement of the Global Innovation Lab for Climate Finance, has accelerated the adoption of the business model around the world in a variety of sectors and industries, from industrial refrigeration and commercial air-conditioning to agricultural and medical cold chains.

- •Pay per use servitisation model (for instance: $USD / crate of herbs stored in a cold room, or USD/ TR-hour). - TR: Ton of refrigerated air.
- •In industrial or real estate applications: can enable at least 30% improvement in Energy efficiency
- •In the off-grid solar refrigeration agrisector: up to 49% reduction in emissions - related to the removal of diesel generators.
The Financial Benefits
- •20% increase in revenues for business implementing CaaS, with constant revenue streams.
- •In the off-grid solar refrigeration agri-sector: 50% increase in farmers income, and 50% reduction in food spoilage.
- •Incentivising a circular economy approach - which potentially further increases business revenues beyond the 20% increase, besides environmental and social benefits.
