Dynamic Combustion Chamber™

The Dynamic Combustion Chamber™ - DCC™ - boiler is fueled by hydrogen and oxygen, emitting zero greenhouse gases.

The DCC™ boiler is a commercial/industrial process steam generator (or water heater) fueled by hydrogen and oxygen. It emits no carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, or other carbonaceous greenhouse gases. Moreover, it is NOx-free with pure hydrogen and oxygen. The primary product of combustion is water (steam), which when condensed is clean enough to be sent to a drain or recycled to the boiler, to an electrolyzer, or to another process that can utilize (warm) water. The purity of this "combustion" or "fuel" steam makes it easier to condense vs. more a dilute steam such as that obtained by combusting hydrogen in air. The energy efficiency of the DCC™ boiler is therefore superior, which is especially relevant wherever the cost of hydrogen is high. The system is particularly well-suited for electrolyzer-derived hydrogen where oxygen is a byproduct that is often vented to the atmosphere.

Implementation Stories

Dynamic Combustion Chamber™ by Hydrogen Technologies LLC
Implemented by a food processing facility in California (United States) in 2025

A zero-emission hydrogen-powered steam boiler will be installed in a food processing facility to help decarbonize operations that currently depend on natural gas boilers. The hydrogen boiler uses pure oxygen rather than air, which eliminates NOx in addition to common fossil fuel emissions including CO2, CO, methane (from natural gas leaks), etc.

Emissions will be reduced from an estimated 12.4 kg daily (3,600 kg annually) to zero.

The environmental benefits

  • The dewpoint is greater for H2/O2 (DCC™ boiler) than H2/air combustion gases (~98 °C and ~70 °C, respectively at 15% excess O2)
  • A DCC™ boiler producing steam at 3000 kg/h generates ~29 cubic meters (7600 U.S. gallons) of clean water daily
  • A DCC™ boiler making 3000 kg/h steam saves 11 tonnes of CO2/day
  • The hydrogen-oxygen fired DCC™ boiler produces at least 400 kg of clean, warm water of combustion per 1000 kg of steam made

The Financial benefits

  • At $1 per kg and electrolyzer O2 recovery, a DCC™ boiler’s fuel cost is equivalent to a ~$6.60/MMbtu ($23/MWh) price point for a conventional boiler
  • Recent natural gas prices in the EU have reached around $100/MMbtu ($340/MWh). The equivalent cost of hydrogen (with electrolyzer O2 recovery) for an optimized DCC™ boiler is ~$15/kg
