Hydrogen electric powertrain for aviation by ZeroAvia implemented by Royal Schiphol Group in Rotterdam (Netherlands) in 2021
In December 2020 British Airways announced a partnership with Zeroavia to explore “the transformational possibilities of moving from fossil fuels to zero-emission hydrogen to power the airline’s future fleet”.

ZeroAvia is building the world's first practical zero emission aviation powertrain, using electric propulsion powered by a hydrogen fuel cell system.
A zero-emission hydrogen-electric propulsion retrofitting solution for aviation
Aviation accounts for 2% of global CO2 emission today, particularity harmful at high altitudes, and is expected to increase by 2-4x in the coming years. Airlines and governments are under high pressure to decarbonise this sector, with many actors making "net-zero" commitments by 2040-2050 such as IAG, Qantas etc. To address the lack of feasible and economically viable solutions available, ZeroAvia provides an integrated and powerful solution for the aviation industry. Through strategic partnerships, this solution combines best-in-class 3rd party components such as electric motor, inverter, H2 fuel cells and hydrogen tank with their disruptive technology. The powertrain can be retrofitted to existing, already certified airframes, significantly lowering certification hurdles. In addition, ZeroAvia aims at sourcing green hydrogen produced by electrolysis directly on-site through partnerships to significantly lower fuel costs for airlines.
