A microgrid solution for off-grid communities
Many remote communities are not connected to the electricity grid and are forced to use diesel generators to produce power. Most of the diesel has to be imported and stored for long periods of time, especially in winter. This is costly. Any reduction in the running time of these diesel generators through renewable energy devices not only saves money, but reduces CO2 emissions, reduces environmental damage from spills, and builds addition capacity and creates jobs. Hydrokinetic turbines provide baseload power for the microgrid. The portability of the system obviates the need for expensive infrastructure. Hydrokinetic turbines are designed for the purpose of generating electricity. The turbines are intended to be placed underwater, in a fixed, floating, anchored or towed configuration, in any location where the effective water current preferably flows with a minimum speed of about 0.25m/s
