Description

The Port of San Diego is conducting a three-year pilot project with ECOncrete® on Harbor Island to demonstrate their Bio-enhancing Concrete Technology for Marine Construction. This project uses ECOncrete’s COASTALOCK Tide Pool Armor to create durable and eco-friendly concrete structures resembling natural rock pools. It tackles challenges like sea-level rise, superstorms, and coastal urbanization worsened by Climate Change.

Impact & Result

Compared to standard cement-based concrete, which accounts for up to 8% of global CO2 emissions, the project has an 80% reduced carbon footprint whilst also rejuvenating coastal ecosystems and their ability to store CO2.

Solution Spotlight

ECOncrete Tech LTD provides a revolutionary science-based approach to eco-engineering of urban, coastal, and marine infrastructure, providing robust, environmentally sensitive concrete solutions for ever-growing climate change threats such as the sea-level rise and superstorms. ECOncrete developed a series of concrete mixes and science-based designs that create suitable biological conditions for the development of rich and diverse floral and faunal communities while providing structural function and complying with all standards for marine construction. ECOncrete's technology has exhibited positive, statistically significant results in numerous long-term evaluation studies conducted in both temperate and tropical environments.
