Port of Vigo
Vigo
The Living Ports project contributes to the transformation of the waterfront and its functionality through the use of ecological innovations and by encouraging public engagement. Developed by a consortium led by ECOncrete, the project is funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program. The initiative aims to shift the coastal and marine infrastructure (ICM) industry towards more sustainable practices by deploying ECOncrete technology along Europe’s waterfronts. Two sites in the port of Vigo and its surrounding areas are testing this technology. At Portocultura, the wall will feature a "Mangrove" and "Azouri" design, while at Bouzas, 100 ECOncrete COASTALOCK™ units—single-layer, armored protection units with caves and tunnels mimicking tidal habitats—will be installed on the riprap surface.
In addition to providing protection against flooding waves, the sea walls are reinforced with a specialized chemical composition and texture that foster the growth and establishment of marine life. ECOncrete’s revolutionary concrete not only stores carbon but also promotes biodiversity, paving the way for net-positive marine infrastructure that benefits both the environment and coastal ecosystems.
ECOncrete Tech LTD provides a revolutionary science-based approach to eco-engineering of urban, coastal, and marine infrastructure, providing robust, environmentally sensitive concrete solutions for ever-growing climate change threats such as the sea-level rise and superstorms. ECOncrete developed a series of concrete mixes and science-based designs that create suitable biological conditions for the development of rich and diverse floral and faunal communities while providing structural function and complying with all standards for marine construction. ECOncrete's technology has exhibited positive, statistically significant results in numerous long-term evaluation studies conducted in both temperate and tropical environments.
