Label Date January 10, 2025
From France
Maturity stage TRL 9 / CRI 3-4 - Commercial Scale Up / Multiple commercial Applications

Maxibrome combines a thermal purification technique with bromine concentration loops to recover 99% of the bromine contained in bromine-bearing brines (hazardous liquid waste generated by the pharmaceutical and chemical sectors, which was previously disposed of by incineration). The production capacity of the process enables to satisfy over 1/3 of the French bromine demand. In brief, polluted bromine-bearing brines are converted into purified and concentrated bromine brines that can be used by the industry. Maxibrome avoids the extraction of a rare natural resource by valorizing brominated waste. This process consumes less water and energy than virgin bromine production and participates in securing a European supply of bromine at a competitive price.

The Environmental Benefits

  • Maxibrome recovers 99% of the bromine contained in bromine-bearing brines
  • Maxibrome has a processing capacity of 2.3 tons of brominated brines per hour
  • Maxibrome has a recycled bromine production capacity of 4400 tons per year
  • Recycling 1 ton of bromine generates in average 20 times less greenhouse gases
  • The production of regenerated bromine emits considerably less CO2eq compared with the production of virgin bromine in China or in France
  • Maxibrome consumes on average up to 3,000 times less water than virgin bromine production

The Financial Benefits

  • Recycled bromine is cheaper than virgin bromine for the consumer
  • The treatment of brominated waste through the process does not induce additional cost for the provider
