Identification

The oceans are suffocating, up to 10 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year. Most of the plastic is coming from land due to a lack of waste management and because the material is often considered worthless. We want to change this perspective and give value to waste in two ways: First, through technology: In collaboration with the Swiss University of Applied Sciences we have developed a mechanical method to bring plastic waste back to life as a valuable material resource, fit to replace virgin plastic in many applications. Second, we create value through social and environmental impact. We offer additional income to local waste pickers and fishermen in Southeast Asia and Mexico to collect the plastic. The plastic gets sorted and cleaned in social enterprises where we create more jobs and offer additional support such as housing, social security, and health insurance. Environmental impact is created through clean-ups and prevention of further pollution.

Implementation Stories

#tide ocean material® by Tide Ocean SA
Implemented by Migros in Zürich (Switzerland) in 2023

Swiss retail giant Migros launched a limited "Fresh Ocean" edition of their iconic Handy dish soap. For the first time its packed in a blue (instead of orange) bottle made from recycled ocean-bound plastic waste supplied by #tide. Because the product was so successful, the Fresh Ocean Handy will become a unlimited edition and stay on the shelfs of Migros.

Result

All these novel attributes did not go unnoticed: Migros’ brand-new Handy Fresh Ocean was nominated for the Swiss Packaging Award 2023 for its innovative features.

#tide ocean material® by Tide Ocean SA
Implemented by Relianz AG in Bonstetten (Switzerland) in 2023

Together with Relianz AG, a Swiss based provider of bulk packaging, Tide Ocean SA has successfully developed big bags made from #tide ocean material®. The polypropylene was recycled by #tide after a thorough analysis of the material’s properties. Fruit juice bottles as well as discarded disposable cups and plates serve as the feedstock. To produce the new raw material, these are cleaned, shredded and then processed into granulate by mechanical recycling. Relianz AG uses the pellets to produce sustainable big bags.

Result

For now the bags contain 30% of ocean-bound plastic, but the next batches will be made from 50% #tide recyclate thanks to further development by Relianz.
